Geaux Tigers and Heels!

We took Peyton to his first basketball game last week when the LSU Tigers played in the NCAA tournament. They happened to get assigned to play the first two rounds in Greensboro, which is just about an hour west of here. The first round was on a Thursday afternoon so we went with Chad, Lauren, and Amelia to cheer the Tigers on. Peyton enjoyed the game, taking in the big crowd and all of the noise.

He especially enjoyed waving his pom-pom in the air when it was time to cheer.

But he even managed to take a little snooze during halftime.

The best part was the ice cream that he got to eat for the first time. After the Tigers beat Butler, the Heels came out and rolled over Radford. Midway through the Heels game, the kids had enough so we headed home, but all in all it was a really great day and I think Peyton and Amelia were very well behaved.

Because LSU and UNC each won in the first round, they had to play each other in the second round on Saturday. And one of them would advance to the Sweet 16 while the other team's season ended. I really felt torn about which team to cheer for. I did my undergrad at LSU, where I learned all about football. Then I learned all about basketball when I got to UNC and watched them win the Championship in 2005. SEC football is equally as exciting as ACC basketball, but the reverse for both conferences has always been inferior, and I've always been able to keep the two separate. Until the LSU basketball team took over the SEC this year and I started worrying that the two teams would meet. Sure enough, they did. Lauren and I cut up an LSU shirt and a UNC shirt and sewed them back together to show our divided loyalty. It was amazing how much attention those shirts attracted. As I walked into the arena, I still wasn't sure who I would be feeling it for more. But it didn't take long for me to figure out that the purple and gold still runs deep in my blood and I really wanted those Tigers to win. They put up a really strong fight, and even took the lead a couple of times. Unfortunately, the Tar Heels' endurance wasn't a match for the Tigers, and the game ended with the Tigers heading back to Baton Rouge. But it was a fun game to watch. We had really great seats, thanks to the LSU Alumni Association. And we even got to indulge in some Popeyes, the LSU way to tailgate, since the closest one to us also happens to be in Greensboro. I'm back to being a Heels fan, and since they beat the Tigers, I hope that they at least go on to win the Championship this year.

Great shirt idea! Sorry the tigers lost but now you know who to cheer for, right? Peyton is just sitting there soaking it all in. Someday he's going to have a lot to say about all kinds of interesting things he did before he was even one years old!

I was wondering how you would swing for this game. I'm glad you figured out a way to cheer for both.
